Help for the community

In The Beginning

Many of us look back on our childhood and feel fortunate to have been raised and educated in the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s in the remarkable South Shore neighborhood of Chicago and its public schools. To help meet the challenges faced by today’s children, a group of Horace Mann alumni from the 1950’s and 1960’s decided to form a non-profit organization, the Horace Mann Alumni Enrichment Fund (HMAEF).

Our mission is to support teachers and students by providing them with both educational materials and life enhancing products and experiences in hopes of encouraging personal and academic success.

Part of this process is to create a safe and nurturing school environment where students thrive and are afforded opportunities that might not be possible without the support and presence of HMAEF.

In the past three years, HMAEF has raised over $105,000 to provide items and programs that are not within the budget of the school. We have facilitated the purchase of backpacks and basic school supplies, library books for each classroom, buses for field trips which would otherwise not be possible, warm winter clothing, and caps and gowns for graduation.

For a complete list of our accomplishments and more detailed information please hover over the GRANTS tab and click on TEACHER REQUESTS FULFILLED.

The website also contains a “Donations” link if you are so inclined. We continue to work hard at providing the students at Horace Mann Academy with the opportunities that we all had while growing up in such a wonderful neighborhood.

HMAEF is requesting suggestions from the alumni of Horace Mann Elementary/Academy that would make Horace Mann an incredibly special place again. You may have a personal skill that you are willing to share with the students or donate to bring special instructors to the school.
